*Foliage Hat* Brioche Knitting Patterns

Foliage Hat is a brioche knitting pattern worked in brioche rib stitch in the round. The pattern is composed of 2 foliage panels with simple brioche rib in between.
For beginners that like the foliage pattern, I would recommend to start with the Foliage Scarf.
And more advanced knitters can start a full brioche knitting adventure with the Foliage Shawl.

Foliage Shawl in Rockshelter Sock
On the Meadowcroft Dyeworks site you can find many wonderful colorway pairings with brioche swatches for each of them, so it's very easy to have an idea of how your brioche knitwork would look like. When you knit a brioche hat, you actually are knitting two hats because brioche stitch is reversible. So, because of that you want to choose carefully both colors that you will use for knitting the hat.

Foliage Hat - Brioche Knitting

Directions:

Purled Cast-On:

Step 1: Make a slip knot on the LH needle. Yarn to front of the work as if to purl. With the RH needle go into the slip knot stitch to purl it and the loop you pull through, pull it long and put it on the LH needle (without twisting it). Now you have 2 stitches on the LH needle.

Step 2: Yarn to front of the work as if to purl. Insert the RH needle from back to the front between the (last) 2 stitches and pick-up the yarn. The loop you pull through, pull it long and put it on the LH needle (without twisting it). This way you have cast-on one more stitch. Repeat step 2 until the required number of stitches are cast-on.

START HERE:

Round 1 (cast-on round) MC: Using the Purled Cast-On (steps 1-2) with main color yarn cast-on:
(28 sts for 2 foliage panels + 64 sts of brioche rib) + 1 st for joining the round = 93 sts
After that, join the contrast color yarn and work round 2.

1. Set-up round:
Round 2 CC: *sl1yo, brp1; rep from*.

2. Brim:
Repeat rounds 3-4 until reached the desired brim height. Finish with round 4.

Round 3 MC: *brk1, sl1yo; rep from*.
After each odd round in main color yarn, pick-up the contrast color yarn and knit the even round.

Round 4 CC: *sl1yo, brp1; rep from*.
Note: knit the “brkyobrk” sts from previous row as: sl1yo, p1, sl1yo
          and the “br4st inc” sts from previous row as: sl1yo, p1, sl1yo, p1, sl1yo
After each even round in contrast color yarn, pick-up the main color yarn and knit the odd round.

After the last round cut the contrast color yarn leaving a palm's length of tail and inserting it to the wrong side of the hat. Then pick-up the main color yarn, brk1, slip the stitch from the right hand needle to the left hand needle and afterwards slip one by one all the remaining stitches over this stitch. Cut the yarn leaving a tail that you pass through the only stitch on the needle and pull on it to tighten the stitch around the yarn end. Weave in the ends.
